Impairments in functioning, social abilities, memory and emotions in children and adults with corpus callosum anomalies. Rehabilitation protocols. Psychomotor therapy. Literature review

Abstract

The purpose of this thematic literature review is to review recent international studies on the most common difficulties in functioning in children and adults with agenesis or dysgenesis of the corpus callosum.

It was done with a focus on common themes in the studies, namely daily functioning, social abilities, emotions, memory, language, detailed thinking, creativity, problem solving and decision making, psychological functioning and interhemispheric interactions. Some of the studies focus on some common characteristics of children and adults with agenesis of the corpus callosum and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and autism and Asperger syndrome. 34 of the most recent studies of the disorders are reviewed with the main goal of introducing the idea of the relevance of this type of research on a global scale, as well as the almost complete lack of knowledge about the overall functioning of this population in the Bulgarian context. The need for ongoing rehabilitation with sequential steps throughout life for people living with corpus callosum agenesis or dysgenesis is deduced, and an attempt is made to propose rehabilitation protocols in early and middle childhood, as well as in adolescence and adulthood. Knowledge is expanded on the application of psychomotor therapy as a comprehensive care and rehabilitation indicated for this target group of children and adults.
