Patent Ductus Arteriosus in Preterm Neonates-Echocardiographic Assessment for Neonatologists

Abstract

Echocardiography is considered the „gold standard“ for diagnosing patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) in neonates. Echocardiography not only confirms or rules out congenital heart defects (CHD), but also provides essential data regarding its hemodynamic effect on pulmonary and systemic circulation.
The aim of this article is to highlight the role of echocardiography in assessing the hemodynamic significance of PDA. Emphasis is placed on echocardiographic parameters that may assist neonatologists  in determining optimal therapeutic strategies for preterm infants with PDA.

Key words: patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), echocardiography, haemodynamic significance, preterm infant
